Name: Bernadette & Catherine
Course: BBC First Click
Silver Surfin’ BDC! Eight older ladies returned to education, here at Barking & Dagenham College, on Friday 20 June 2011. Why? To learn about the web for free on our BBC First Click Course.
All nine were star pupils and Bernadette, left, was not alone in giving top marks to our IT tutor, Paul Yates.
Catherine, right, signed up to the course after a successful visit to a local bookmaker’s, and believes the course gave her the skills to improve her chances by studying horses’ form online.
Tutor Paul was on sparking form. “Remember, ladies – when booking a holiday online,” he advised, “that I can only take two weeks off work at a time …”
The ninth pair of ears paying heed to what Paul had to say belonged to the British Broadcasting Corporation’s own Kathryn Morrison, who was sitting in on proceedings to see how College delivered the new course and how it was received.
“I just wanted to send an e-mail to say many thanks for making me so welcome on Friday,” she emailed the following Monday.” It was great to see the College as well as sit in on the course, and meet the eight students. The course is actually designed for six to eight students, so you had an ideal number! If there had been any more students, I think it would have been harder for the class to make so much progress. I was very impressed by your tutor, who made the experience friendly and engaging, yet still covered an enormous amount of ground.
“I heard two of the learners talking about how they intended to follow up their First Click session by coming back to the college so it sounded as though the ‘class’ thoroughly enjoyed their experience at the College,” she added.
