Extra-curricular excellence won Nadine Attzs the ACES Award, given by the African Caribbean Education Schools and Youth project.
The award ceremony, held on the evening of Friday 1 April 2011, celebrated the achievements of young African and Caribbean individuals in schools, colleges and universities.
Nadine’s photographic journey, from her mother’s home in Hackney to ”the less multi-cultural” parts of Essex, featured in an exhibition last year. Seeing Nadine’s images on show moved her Head of Photography David Bennett to nominate Nadine for recognition in the ACES Awards’ “Excellence in Extra-Curricular Activity” category.
She was selected by the ACES Diamond Ball judges, to receive an award at the largest and most spectacular ceremony to date, held at the prestigious Central Hall Westminster, Storey’s Gate, London SW1H 9NH.
The award-winners were given the opportunity to network with role models, other achievers, teachers, youth leaders, company representatives and other high-profile guests at a spectacular reception, to make invaluable contacts which could benefit them in the future. The 2011 event also included:
|
photos on the red carpet
|
a press call with local and national media
|
the awards ceremony itself, featuring 50 outstanding young people, often accompanied by their parents and teachers
|
photos taken with the awards presenters and other role models |
High-profile guest included Tim Campbell, the first winner of BBC Television’s The Apprentice and founder of the Bright Ideas Trust), the actor and law graduate Femi Oyeniran, whose films include Kidulthood (2006) and Adulthood (2008), and representatives from companies such as Barclays and Accenture.
Attendance at the award ceremony was a condition of the award, but wild horses could not have kept Nadine and her mother, Linda, from the red carpet!
This year, award-winners received their commendations in front of an audience of over 1,500 people, with each winner and their organisation inviting as many supporters as possible to cheer for them as they receive their awards on stage.

Nadine's touching image, above - just one from the exhibition which prompted Head of Photography David Bennett to nominate her - was composed by folding family photos into origami flowers and photographing the result.
