College mentor helps Joe to score on and off the football pitch

5 April 2017

Joe White did not attend mainstream school from Year 8 onwards, and in many ways he had been cast aside by the education system.

Since joining Barking & Dagenham College he has flourished both in his studies and on the football pitch. He’s making good progress towards achieving his Subsidiary Diploma in Sport and, whilst at the College, he began playing football professionally. He has appeared several times for Dagenham & Redbridge 1st team, and has recently gone on loan to Wealdstone FC, where he has been scoring goals regularly.

One of the keys to his success at College is the additional learning support that they have given Joe, for example, a mentor; Robert Belcher was an Extended Diploma Sport learner at the College last year, and he is now supporting Joe in class and with his assignments. Mentor Rob says:

“Joe has been getting on really well since I have been mentoring him. He has been producing work at a very high level and has been getting through all the work at a very good rate."

“He just needs to continue what he is doing, I personally feel he will be able to achieve his target.”

The Football Academy at Barking & Dagenham College is run in conjunction with League Football Education (LFE). Gavin Willacy from LFE is very impressed with Joe's progress. He pays tribute to Joe, saying:

“What progress made over the last year. This reflects the effort Joe has put in, the positive attitude, and the ability to listen to advice and carry it out.

“Now I challenge Joe to push on for the second half of the season. In college that means completing the ten units for the 90 Credit Diploma and aiming for merits in assignments now, as he has shown he can get passes. Joe should continue to aim higher and see where he can go.”
