College praised by Ofsted

16 August 2017

Barking & Dagenham College has once again been praised for its performance by Ofsted, which recently awarded the College a rating of ‘Good’ - an impressive feat in the current challenging climate of Further Education

The College ‘continues to be good’ having maintained the rating that it was awarded during its last inspection four years ago.

The Ofsted report was overwhelmingly positive with inspectors noting the excellent work the College has done since 2013 towards its goal of being outstanding, commenting that: “Leaders’ and managers’ highly effective promotion of change and improvement continues apace, placing learners, and improving the quality of provision, at the heart of the college’s work.”

The report also says that learners:

•        “progression to employment and higher education is good”

•        “develop good skills in their vocational areas and also for their wider employment”

•        “learn in very good quality accommodation, with good resources”

•        “respond positively to the good support the staff provide to help them to develop their personal and career aspirations”

•        “behaviour is good”

•        “retention on courses is very high”

The College was also praised for its effective safeguarding and equality and diversity. Ofsted reported that the college has high expectations of its staff, learners and apprentices, with “no excuses accepted for poorer performance”.

Principal and CEO Yvonne Kelly said of the report: “I am delighted that the work of the students and staff has been recognised and that the College remains one of the best in the country.

"For Ofsted to report that leaders and managers make sure that learners, apprentices and customers are at the centre of the College’s work, fills me with enormous pride.

"I am very pleased that the inspectors noted that the College successfully promotes an aspirational culture with high standards.

"It is these high standards that translate into success for our students, leading them on to further or higher education or to work.”
