Over 100 students graduated from Barking & Dagenham College last weekend.

Watched by 250 of their proud friends, family, VIPs and members of staff, the students received their degrees at the College’s annual Higher Education Awards & Graduation Ceremony.

Principal and CEO, Yvonne Kelly, gave the opening address before leading the celebrations of the outstanding achievement of the students. Awards and certificates were presented in subjects ranging from automotive engineering, 3D design, and construction, to photography, animation and business management.

The Worshipful Mayor Cllr Abdul Gafoor Aziz attended the event on behalf of the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham and personally congratulated each graduate. 

As well as celebrating the graduates, this year, four special awards were made by the Symons-Hatton Trustees to recognise students who have a dedicated and genuine passion for lens based media shown through the commitment and development of their studies and personal creative work.

The photography first prize was awarded to Michael Scott, a B.A (Hons) Photography graduate whilst the first prize for Creative Media Production was awarded to Chris Thorne who is currently studying on Higher National Diploma in Creative Media production at the college.

The Highly commended award for Photography was awarded to Indre Neiberkaite.

The Highly commended award for Creative Media Production was awarded to Gary Dudman.

The trust was set up in memory of Brian Hatton who was a lecturer in at the College in the 1980s and his wife Lucinda Symons who was a talented professional photographer who sadly passed away in 2011.This is the seventh year of these awards.

Brendan James, Head of Higher Level Skills & Enhancement at the College commented:

“It’s great to see so many local people realising their dream of securing their undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications through the college. Studying at Barking & Dagenham College can save on travel costs, accommodation costs and the tuition fees are much lower than most universities, opening up an accessible route to higher education to many more people.

 “Many of this year’s graduates had progressed within the college and it is so rewarding to have been able to contribute to their educational journey. We are very proud of their achievements.”
