Hairdressing Traineeships & Apprenticeships

Train for your creative career

If you enjoy a creative environment and may consider starting your own business in the future, then a career as a hairstylist could be for you.

It takes two years to complete an apprenticeship in hairdressing up to Level 2. You can continue your studies beyond Level 2 if you wish.

Hairdressing Traineeship: your first step towards an Apprenticeship

Traineeships are an ideal way to get up-grade your skills ready for an apprenticeship.

With a traineeship you will benefit from work experience in a commercial salon to:

  • Improve your skills, confidence and inter-personal skills
  • Improve your workplace skills and help prepare you for work
  • Develop your skills in the hair and beauty industry

Alongside your salon work experience, your studies at College will include:

  • English and Maths - both are important for any job and you can achieve a recognised qualification
  • CV writing
  • Interview preparation
  • Job search skills

There's more information about traineeships on our website via this link or you can call Brooke Shadrake on 020 3667 0112 to find out more.

An Apprenticeship: a job in a salon combined with day-release training

As an apprentice hairdresser you will combine your job in the salon with day-release training at the Headjogs Academy training centre in either Ilford or Romford.

Every day is different in hairdressing, because each client is different. You should enjoy being part of a team and be able to talk to people from all backgrounds and of all ages.

Whilst you do not need to be brimming with confidence at the start of your course, you do need to be at ease talking to people and helping to welcome them to the salon environment.

You also need to be well presented and well groomed.

Qualifying as a hairdresser

The Headjogs Academy is part of Barking & Dagenham College. The College is one of London's leading providers of apprenticeship training, so you know that you are in good hands.

At the end of your two year apprenticeship you will achieve the following qualification:

Level 2 Diploma NVQ in Hairdressing (City & Guilds).

As an alternative to an apprenticeship, you can study on hairdressing as a full-time course. Hairdressing courses are offered at Barking & Dagenham College's Technical Skills Academy in Barking town centre, our specialist campus for young adults age 16 - 18.
