It depends upon the age of your apprentice and below we give you an outline of the costs.
For an apprentice aged 16 – 18
If your apprentice is aged 16-18 or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship, they will be earning the apprentice rate national minimum wage (as of October 2011 this is £2.60 per hour). As their skills develop, however, employers often increase the salary of their apprentice and the average weekly wage for an apprentice is currently £170.
For apprentices aged 16-18 this includes all their training – you do not need to pay any further training fees as these costs are met by the Government.
The apprentice’s contract of employment must be at least 30 hours a week.
For an apprentice aged 19+
If your apprentice is aged 19 and over and not in the first year of their apprenticeship, they will be earning the minimum wage for their age group, which is currently £4.98 (as at October 2011) for 18 to 20 year olds, and the main rate (for employees aged 21 and over) is £6.08 (as at October 2011).
For those apprentices aged 19 and over, half the cost of the training is funded by the Government. The remaining 50 per cent is paid by the employer.
Let’s look at an example:
Business & Administration Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3) has the following elements:-
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Business & Administration
- Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Business & Administration
- Key Skills L2 in ICT, Communications and Application of Number
50 per cent cost is £1177.00 – achievement within 12 months would equate to a cost of less than £23 per week.
