Our media learners triumph with “Wheelchair Basketball” film

TV presenter and wheelchair basketball player Adrian "Ade" Adepetian presents Barking & Dagenham College Media learner Lauren Palmer (in blue) with the tophy she shares with fellow learners Dami Alli and Samuel Charlery.

Suzanne James (in black), Curriculum Team Leader for Media, said of the film made by her learners Dami Alli, Samuel Charlery, and Lauren Palmer:
"It is a real honour to see three of my learners progress onto university and get their outstanding film recognised within the industry. I could see the potential in this idea at the pre-production stage. The actual production was difficult and did require a re-shoot, but the end result is outstanding!"

College’s high hopes for the success of our learners’ video Wheelchair Basketball were justified, as the film swooshed in to win its category.

The short film — which premiered in College on The Life Channel in May this year — was short-listed for best documentary/experimental in the 17-19 category at the Film Nation: Shorts Awards 2011.

Film Nation: Shorts is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the next generation of young film-makers. The best work will be screened at the iconic venues during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to an audience of millions.

“Congratulations to Media learners Dami Alli, Samuel Charlery and Lauren Palmer,” said Advanced Practitioner – Media, Suzanne James (pictured left, in black).

“I could see the potential in this idea at the pre-production stage,” Suzanne added. “The end result is outstanding. I believe it embraces all of the Olympic and Paralympic core values.”

Lauren Palmer, one of the film’s creators (pictured left, in blue), said: “I was really ecstatic and happy to find out we had won! I was so shocked and really wasn’t expecting it!”
