Barking & Dagenham College’s Excellence Awards, an annual celebration of its learners and staff, played out on Tuesday night in front of a diverse audience encompassing family & friends, VIPs and dignitaries, and business representatives from the Borough.

The event was timed to highlight links between the College and the local business community during Colleges Week 2010. The celebrations are set to continue into Saturday’s quarterly open event at the College, also timed to fall within the Association of Colleges event, from 8-14 November.

The evening, a glamorous and fun occasion, included contributions from across the curriculum:

Professor John Joughin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of East London, gave a motivational, inspiring and encouraging message to the learners. “Never give up,” he advised, “and with hard work and dedication, you can achieve your goals.”

Speaking the day after the College’s annual celebration of its learners and staff, Barking & Dagenham College Principal & CEO Cathy Walsh said: “From the dance number at the start of the Awards by our talented Performing Arts learners, right through to the final presentation, last night’s Excellence Awards event was a thoroughly enjoyable and inspirational affair.  For everyone who came along, our learners, staff, speakers, sponsors and guests, and everyone who worked so hard behind the scenes to make it happen, my sincere thanks.

“Let’s make this a further year of success and achievement for learners and staff so we have even more to celebrate next year.”

Made in Dagenham

In her recent podcast for staff, College Principal Cathy Walsh described the film “Made In Dagenham” as, “a fantastic piece of social history, with a feel-good factor.”

The real stars of the film “Made In Dagenham”, former Ford Motor Company workers Vera Sime, Gwen Davis, Eileen Pullan and Sheila Douglass.

The film shows how local women in 1968 – machinists who had to do a skilled job, but were classified by their employer, the Ford Motor Company, as doing unskilled work – changed the world by being organised and by representing themselves. The characters prove the value of their work is equal to that of their male counterparts.
