Arresting art impresses Met

Artwork courtesy of learners at Barking & Dagenham College was unveiled on Monday 25 July at the Metropolitan Police patrol base at Fresh Wharf in Barking.

The Police approached the College around a year ago to commission learners from 3D design, fashion, art & design and photography to produce eye-catching artwork for the newly opened patrol base.

The learners were briefed that the artwork needed to be either police related or bring the outside in.

3D design made a range of 3D interior accessory objects - from innovative notice boards through to bespoke made furniture and photography produced a series of high quality framed photographic prints based on specific themes and influences.

Learners studying fashion have designed and made a range of textile and interior furnishing items and art & design learners produced a range of 2D artwork that has been developed from specific themes and influences.

At the official unveiling, Borough Commander, Chief Superintendent Matt Bell praised the learners, he said: “The wide range of artistic decoration that has been produced for us has massively enhanced the aesthetics of the Fresh Wharf building.  We are now considering adding one piece per year to the collection through a competition at the College.  This will also support the very close working relationship that we currently have with both staff and learners at the College.”

See what else Chief Superintent Matt Bell had to say.

Vice Principal at the College, Lesley Graham added: “One of the College’s main strategic objectives is to provide an ‘enriching and transformational experience for our learners by empowering them to develop as good citizens and to contribute to their local communities’. What a perfect example we have of that here today!”

Lesley added: “Our learners were briefed to “produce artwork that would transform the new building’ that brief has certainly been met perfectly.”
