From Monday 11 October 2010, the Work Based Learning team at Barking & Dagenham College will be known as the Apprenticeships Team.

The change in name is to more accurately reflect the service we offer to businesses and learners.

The Government continues to support and promote Apprenticeships and it is important that we capitalise on the strong brand and positive business benefits that employing Apprentices bring.

“”The taking on of an apprentice is often a leap of faith,” according to Apprenticeships Team Manager David Delmont, ”but as many employers will become to recognise, they are not only providing employment for people, they are also maintaining the trade skills that are necessary for the future of their industry. An apprentice grows with a company and in that growth, adds real value to the company. This is good for both the apprentice and the employer, and is reflected in the number of companies that take on more apprentices once existing ones have completed their training at college.

“An apprenticeship is a coming together of both academic and practical skills, so an apprentice will get a far more broad-based and beneficial qualification,” David continued. ”By receiving the underpinning knowledge from the college-based course and being able to demonstrate this knowledge in the workplace, an apprentice can show to himself and the employer practically what they get out of the apprenticeship programme. Key skills which are also part of the programme, show through their achievement how academic ability goes in partnership with practical ability.

“The College is proud of the achievements of its apprentices, and how by growing the skilled tradesmen of the future, it achieves Government recognition. This recognition of success enables the college to also grow its apprenticeship provision through increased funding. So a win-win partnership is achieved between the learner, the employer and the training provider.”

The Apprenticeships Team is located in the Ashford Building and “The A-Team” is: Dawn Addis, Jaci Nuttall, Bev Acott, Melissa Blake, Liz Burling, Linda Bernstein and Debbie Wren.
