College announces new Chair of Corporation

30th July 2015

Rob Whiteman, the former Chief Executive at the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, and the current Chief Executive of The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has been named as the new Chair of Corporation at Barking & Dagenham College.

Rob’s role at the College will see him steer the College’s Executive Board as it continues to move forward as a leading further and higher education college. Rob has always been committed to putting skills on the Government agenda and was a member of the Prime Minister’s Apprentice and Ambassador Council. In addition, while at the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, his remit included looking at skills in the borough which meant he got to be introduced to the College and the work it does. As Rob explains:

“I’m an East Ender and I’m committed to the area. Providing the opportunity to gain skills is vital to help continue the borough’s development and this is where Barking & Dagenham College plays a key role.”

Rob, who is an accountant by profession, is a well-known commentator and writer on public service reform and modernisation across the public sector. This experience will certainly stand him in good stead for his latest role at the College. The further education sector has been hit with a number of government funding cuts in recent months, making it a difficult time for colleges across the country, but as Rob explains:

“I hope my experience of running organisations and understanding public finance will mean against a backdrop of austerity that I can play a role in helping the College. It’s a great College that’s ambitious and wants to grow. The challenge is to do that while facing funding cuts and the best way to do this is to see it as an opportunity, not a threat. Well run colleges with a clear strategy and good team will flourish – and that’s what we have at Barking & Dagenham College.”

Rob added:

“Barking & Dagenham College has been on a remarkable journey over the last seven years under Cathy Walsh, the Principal’s leadership and I feel quite excited about playing a part and making the next seven years equally successful.”

Barking & Dagenham College’s Principal and CEO, Cathy Walsh, OBE said:

“We are delighted to welcome Rob to the team. His background and knowledge is perfectly suited to the role of Chair of our Corporation. We look forward to working with him as Barking & Dagenham College continues to deliver higher level technical and professional training to give Londoners the skills they need to compete in the global job market.”
