College student named Young Entrepreneur of the Year

23rd July 2015

A Barking & Dagenham College student has been awarded the Young Entrepreneur title by the Barking & Dagenham Chamber of Commerce.

Aleksandrs Prihozijs, 17, from Dagenham, who studies business at the College, was nominated for the award, sponsored by The Nova Agency, by his tutor Adnan Mahmood.

Six months ago Aleksandrs decided that he wanted to do something that would bring him in some money to help support himself as he studied. With that in mind, he began to look into importing hand-crafted candles from his hometown of Riga, Latvia. Since then he has quickly established his company, Surprise World, which currently sells a range of candles retailing from £15. Along the way, Aleksandrs has been supported by the College, which is well-known for encouraging entrepreneurial spirit in its students. It is this spirit that clearly impressed the judges, who awarded Aleksandrs the title of Young Entrepreneur at the Barking & Dagenham Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2015.

Commenting on his win, Aleksandrs said:

“It feels really great to win, but it was very unexpected. When they first read out my name, I thought they were just telling the audience I was a nominee. Then I saw that my name and picture had come up on the screen and I realised I had won!”

Aleksandrs intends to use the win to help his business. As he continues:

“It will really show how professional my business is which is great.”

Right now though his certificate and trophy are in pride of place in his mother’s house.

Aleksandrs will be returning to the College in September to continue his studies. Alongside this he plans to continue to grow his business, and hopes one day to own his own gift shop.
