Community sports day aims to inspire children to do sport

28th March 2017

Barking & Dagenham College joined forces with charity SportInspired to encourage local schoolchildren to be physically active.

Yesterday (Monday 27th March) 120 seven and eight-year-olds spent half a day doing fun sports activities at Barking & Dagenham College.

The event gave the youngsters from Rush Green Primary School and William Bellamy Primary School a chance to try a variety taster activities, to encourage them to get involved with clubs and activities in the borough. Activities included: basketball, hockey, multi-sports, dodgeball and karate.

Sports and public services students at the college helped organise and coach the sessions, gaining valuable work experience; one of the helpers was Samuel Owusu, a level 3 sports student, aged 19 from Dagenham who commented:

“I really enjoyed motivating the kids and loved working with them."

“This was great work experience for me as I want to become a professional sports coach. Doing an event like this has helped me to develop my leadership and communication skills.”
