Finding out about careers

8th March 2021

Barking & Dagenham College celebrated National Careers Week by hosting a series of online interactive talks from industry experts.

The aim of the events was to help attendees find out about different careers and how to enter them.

The online webinars, which were open to all, took place Monday to Friday and covered a whole range of topics and careers.

The week started with talks about careers in the Royal Air Force as well as a talk on investment banking by Mercedes Ola, from Goldman Sachs, who spoke about her personal journey into banking. There was also a talk on finance with Investment 2020 and a webinar on digital marketing, which covered the trends being seen in the industry, the skills needed and what jobs are available within the sector.

In addition, participants got to hear about degree programmes on offer with West Ham United and find out about a career in the Royal Navy and London Fire Brigade. Chris Aniche, from Curling Moore Solicitors spoke about careers in law and shared insights into the skills needed and talked about his own experiences in entering the industry.

There was even a fantastic, high energy, motivational digital workshop. It addressed the most important skills needed by youth today, and was given by Empowered Youth’s Dene Botha, a recognised thought-leader from South Africa.

There were also helpful sessions on interview skills hints and tips and topics such as what skills employers are looking for.

As the event was open to the public, the College also found that a large number of secondary school students attended, which was great to see.

Agnes Melkvi, Events Officer from Barking & Dagenham College said: “We were delighted that so many organisations took the time to speak about the numerous different career options out there. It was a great opportunity for our students and the wider public to explore further the careers they have in mind or perhaps find out about jobs that they had never considered before! It was a very busy week and great fun.”
