Photography students create exhibition for Black History month

19th October 2021

Students at the East London Institute of Technology have launched an online photography exhibition to mark Black History Month.

As part of their course, photography students have been producing ‘photographic narratives’ around the theme of black, all of which are being used to create a unique ‘Insta-exhibition’ online.

Photography student Becky Brown is one of the students who has contributed and created a series of images for the exhibition. Whilst the series as a whole is designed to show the beauty of black women, each individual photograph tells its own story.

In the photo ‘A call for change’ you can see the model biting the phone, representing the anger and will to fight for freedom. In ‘Let our voices be heard’ she is shouting down the phone, making her voice heard. It shows determination. We need to change our ways. We need to continue working towards equality until it is achieved. This isn’t just for us, it’s also for our future generations.

The work can be seen by following shades_of_black_2021 on Instagram. Stickers are also being placed around the local area, on lamp posts, in barbers, beauty salons, food stores and restaurants. The stickers will include a QR code that once scanned will take you to the work of the students online.

The students hope that the online exhibition will help engage with local residents and businesses and really encourage people to think about Black History Month.
