A group of students got the opportunity to set up and run a real business and trade to the public at Spitalfields Market last week.
The five Barking & Dagenham College students, aged 16-22 came up with a business idea called Mug Makers. The activity was part of a scheme run by the charity Your Horizon which aims to help young people with the transition from College to working life. The programme gives students the opportunity to build key employability skills with students supported to take their next step by expert business volunteers from Old Mutual Wealth. Your Horizon believes that the best way for young people to develop key skills is to learn by doing and so they inspire and support them to set up and run a real business.
In preparation for their stint as market traders, students participated in a workshop run by Your Horizon at the College where they developed a business plan, worked in teams and developed designs for mugs; then, they prepared to sell at Spitalfields Market, where they were among other students from different schools and colleges.
Last Wednesday they set up their stall and presented their idea to stars from the most recent series of the BBC’s The Apprentice - Samuel Boateng and Paul Sullivan.
