Students to perform in National Theatre Connections Festival

5th April 2016

National Theatre Connections is a nationwide celebration of new plays for young people. Connections is produced by the National Theatre and supported by a number of individuals, trusts and foundations.

Connections plays are commissioned for and about young people from some of the best contemporary playwrights, for performance by schools and youth theatres all over the UK and Ireland, making Connections one of the world’s largest celebrations of youth theatre.

For their 21st Anniversary, Connections is working with 500 youth theatres and schools to stage 12 fantastic plays.

Students from Barking & Dagenham College will perform Eclipse by Simon Armitage at the Broadway Theatre, Barking, on Tuesday 12 April and on Saturday 14 May at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.

Trainee actors and technical theatre students are collaborating to perform and present their interpretation of Eclipse by Simon Armitage. They will perform at the Broadway Theatre, Barking in April and at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in May.

The play revolves around six friends interviewed by the police after the disappearance of Lucy Lime, a strange unnerving girl - 'I am a walking Universe, I am' - whom they met beneath the cliffs on a Cornish beach, just before the total eclipse of the sun.

Tania Ison, Lecturer and Course Leader at the College, said

“To work with professionals at a high level in the industry is a fantastic experience for everyone involved, not just for our acting students but also our technical theatre students, who are creating a magical set to match the feel of the piece.

"After the first performance, a director from the National Theatre will give feedback to the students which, at this point in their training, provides a hugely valuable opportunity for them to learn and develop.”
