Women in technology competition

12th March 2018

Three female executives from Twitch, the live streaming video platform, went to Barking & Dagenham College last week to judge a competition about women in technology.

The College got in touch with Twitch as they include work experience within each of the college courses. Three Twitch employees, Lauren Forbes, Nell Hopson-Hill and Frankie Ward were happy to help and worked with IT Lecturer Alfie Zekaj to come up with a technology-related brief. They decided to tie it in with International Women’s Day which fell on the same day of the competition (8th March), asking students to research and nominate 10 inspirational women in technology.

43 students took part in the Twitch competition and created posters to show their 10 suggested female tech leaders. 18 year old Maria Levi Rodrigues Adriao was named the winner. Maria who came to London from her native Portugal to study at the college three months ago and lives in Dagenham said: “It feels really good to have my work recognised.”

Her tutor Alfie Zekaj added, “This was great for the students, it gave them experience of doing research and also fulfilling a brief – both really important skills they will need when looking for jobs. The standard of entries was excellent – well done to all of the students.”
