June COVID Update

Coronavirus Update – Information for Students, Parents, Staff and Partners

11 June 2020

We hope that our students and their families are safe and well, and we are looking forward to welcoming you back to Barking and Dagenham College (BDC).

Over the last few months, we as a nation have worked extremely hard to limit the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID) and its impact to our daily lives. We want to thank the incredible efforts of all our key workers for their continuing efforts as our government looks to restarting our economy.

Following the government’s announcement in March, we have moved to blended and remote learning to deliver our high-quality education. For the majority of our students, this arrangement will stay in place until further notice and will continue to be reviewed regularly.

In line with the current government guidance, BDC is currently undertaking the careful planning of a phased return of staff and students to our campuses. As our priority has and will always be the safety of our college community, we are committed to ensuring:

  • Students and staff will return as part of a gradual, clear and well-planned return on a priority needs basis
  • Arrangements and procedures are put in place to comply with government social distancing guidance and protective measures
  • The highest consideration for the health, safety and wellbeing of all staff and students whilst on our campuses.

As part of this plan, our first phase will be to welcome back students and apprentices that are required to attend practical assessments, take onsite exams, undertake end point assessments (EPA) or access computers on campus to successfully complete the accreditation and certification of their respective courses. The following information below has been put together to guide these students.

For all our other students, our high-quality courses will continue to be delivered directly to you through online and remote learning. With a commitment to your wellbeing and learning outcomes, we will continue to offer you the best learning experience during this unprecedented time.

As our commitment to your learning, we will be reopening the college to a limited number of students from 15 June 2020 based on your need to attend practical assessments, take exams or access computers onsite to successfully complete your course.

For all students that have been identified as undertaking these relevant courses, you will have received an email in your college account inviting you back to the college.

To ensure we are able to safely deliver your practical assessments or onsite exams in line with the current government social distancing guidelines and protective measures, please note the following:

  • Shortened college hours
Invited students will receive updated timetables to reflect our shortened college hours between 10am – 3pm. This is to allow students to avoid travelling during peak times to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Limited student numbers
Students will only be permitted on campus through invitation based on their learning priorities. All students will be required to show their student ID to enter through college security who have been advised of returning students
  • One-way systems and procedures
To minimise interaction between groups, students will be asked to use specific entrances and exits, follow directional arrows for traffic flow around buildings and stay in the same group/rooms wherever possible
  • Minimised student movements
To reduce their potential exposure, students will not be permitted to leave until the end of their final session and have been advised to arrive just before and leave immediately after lessons
  • COVID Code of Conduct
We will be implementing and strictly enforcing this code from 15 June 2020. Any students that are found to have breached this code will be immediately asked to leave and face further disciplinary action

To ensure we are able to provide the safest possible environment to our students and staff, some facilities and services offered to students on campus has been impacted.

  • Student services
  • IT services
  • College first aiders
  • Emotional support and counselling services
