College offers new pharmacy apprenticeships
5 December 2013
Barking & Dagenham College is working with the North East London Local Pharmaceutical Committee (NELLPC) to offer 100 new pharmacy technician apprenticeships, helping to provide new employment opportunities across North East London.
Already 60 apprentices have been signed up, and the College is looking to find more young people interested in this opportunity. Whilst many may think a pharmacist’s main role is dispensing medicine, the job is actually much broader. For example they provide stop smoking services and ‘Healthy Living’ campaigns, such as the current NHS Flu Vaccination campaign.
As an introduction to their studies, the current and soon-to-be pharmacy technician apprentices recently attended a special stop smoking course at the College, where they were able to learn new skills to help people give up. In the Barking & Dagenham area there are an estimated 43,010 smokers, with 1,480 successfully quitting every year and many more wanting to quit. It means that the skills the apprentices have learned on the course will certainly be useful to them in their new roles in community pharmacies and adds value to their qualification.
Stephen Lee, Apprenticeship Manager from Barking & Dagenham College added:
“We are delighted to be working with the North East London Local Pharmaceutical Committee to be able to provide new employment opportunities. Becoming a pharmacist offers a great career and with these new apprenticeships, it means apprentices can gain qualifications in the industry alongside hands on experience at a pharmacy."
"Apprenticeships are a really good way of earning and learning at the same time. As a result they are proving more and more popular with young people who are keen to get started in their career but want to ensure they have all the right qualifications too.”
Hemant Patel, Secretary at the NELLPC said:
“We are dedicated to ensuring that our industry keeps attracting young talent and these new apprenticeships provide us with an opportunity to do just that. We are working closely with Barking & Dagenham College to provide the best training and education to our apprentices and would really encourage anyone who is interested to get in touch with the College immediately.”
Spaces for the pharmacy technician apprenticeships are filling up fast. To find out more about how you can apply for an apprenticeship, please contact Rob Brooks/Stephen Lee at Barking & Dagenham College on: Tel 020 8090 3020 or email: Robert.firstname.lastname@example.org.
