What is an Apprenticeship and how does it work?

An apprentice is anyone age 16 or over, and there is no upper age limit.

As an employer you may choose to recruit an apprentice, or you may prefer to train an existing member of your team via an Apprenticeship.

Apprentices usually work with you for part of the week, and study at college. Typically an apprentice will train on the job for four days a week and attend college one day a week.

The time it takes to complete an Apprenticeship varies according to the career your apprentice is following.

Choose the training level to suit your business

You can choose to train your apprentice at one of three levels, depending on their role in your organisation. Remember, there is no age limit to being an apprentice and you can offer Apprenticeship training to a current employee.

Intermediate: your apprentice studies at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs grade A*- C)

Advanced:  your apprentice studies at Level 3 (A Level equivalent)

Higher: your apprentice studies at Level 4 or above (degree level equivalent)
