All our courses are designed to cover the full range of topics and tasks as laid down by the awarding body in response to industry requirements. All practical assignments will take place in our industry-standard workshops, with other work a mix of classroom and assignment activities.
This course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills needed to operate at a high level in the construction industry.
Year One:
You will study the process of refurbishing a small building, including the surveying, designing and implementation of the works. As well as basic skills in technology, design, and science and materials, you will also develop CAD skills that can be used elsewhere in the course.
Year Two:
You will consider the technology behind more complex, multi-storey buildings. This involves exploring the importance of sustainability, health and safety, and management in the construction process.
A year-long group project will also develop your interpersonal skills. It culminates in you presenting a complete building, giving you chance to demonstrate your knowledge of the construction process from inception through to design, construction, handover, and maintenance.
Plus optional units can be taken in the first and second years including:
- CAD
- Management Principles
Some extra units are required for entry to the professional institutes such as CIOB and BIAT. Extending the HNC to an HND would give the necessary exemption.
This is a part-time course, requiring attendance at the college one day per week to an early evening finish.
Assessment is made on the basis of course work and assignments completed, and upon end tests or time-controlled assignments. These are all set and marked internally and moderated by BTEC. The HNC can be obtained by passing 8 units which include those essential to the course.
You should have successfully completed one of the following:
1. BTEC National Certificate in Building Studies.
2. BTEC National Diploma in Construction.
3. A suitable bridge course after completing other studies.
4. One A Level
There is also an exceptional entry criterion for students with wide experience of the building industry wishing to improve their academic qualifications.
This HNC in Construction is the basic academic qualification required for entrance to professional institutes. It provides partial exemption from the examinations of some professional institutes. The HNC also gives entry to part-time degree courses in architecture, building and quantity surveying.
