This qualification provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills essential to the health and social care sector, and supports progression to further learning at Level 4 and above, Higher Education and the workplace.

On this course you'll build on your learnings at Levels 1 & 2 to develop in-depth subject knowledge.

You will need to complete 9 mandatory units to achieve this qualification. The mandatory units are:

  • Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care
  • Human growth and development
  • Safeguarding in health and social care
  • Communication in health and social care
  • Infection prevention and control in health and social care
  • Psychological perspectives in health and social care
  • Sociological perspectives in health and social care
  • Working in health and social care
  • Reflective practice

You will have 1 exam at the end of the first term of this course and will be assessed by CACHE.

You will study 3 days a week, including your study programme of maths, English, work experience and tutorials. You will spend 2 days a week in a vocational placement and gain relevant experience to link this to your studies.

You will need to have GCSE Maths, English Language and two additional subjects at grade 4 (C) or above.

As part of the application process you will also be asked to explain why you want to study this course, so that we can ensure any course offer made aligns to your career goals.

One of these GCSEs must be in Science.

Entry to this course is dependent on the outcome of a Disclosing and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Our staff are here to support you in your learning journey. They all have recent industry experience, and many of them continue to work in care alongside their teaching.

You'll spend 350 hours on industry placement during each year of the course.

Working in the industry allows you to put your knowledge into practice. It'll also help with progressing to further study or when looking for jobs.

On successful completion of the first year of the course leads directly on to the second (Extended) year. You must pass the exam, have excellent attendance and punctuality, in order to progress to the second year.

Career progression

There are number of routes you can take following successful completion of a course. Further study can include Higher Education courses or a Higher Apprenticeship where you will expand your skills through study whilst earning a wage. Or you may choose to move directly into employment.
