This one-year, full-time course supports progression to an apprenticeship in engineering or to a further year of study at Level 3.

If taken as part of a programme of study that includes other BTEC Nationals or A Levels, it supports progression to higher education.

The course programme will comprise the following units:

  • Engineering principles
  • Delivery of engineering processes safely as a team
  • Engineering product design and manufacture
  • Applied commercial and quality principles in engineering
  • Computer Aided Design in Engineering
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic systems

The course is assessed through a combination of exams, assignments and practical assessments.

You must have:

5 GCSEs including Maths (Grade 5 or above) , English (Grade 4 or above), Science (Grade 4 or above), and 2 other subjects (Grade 4 or above).

You will have 30 hours of work experience during the course.

You will also have the opportunity to complete work experience in Europe as part of the Erasmus programme.

On successful completion of the course you can progress to the BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering, into employment or an apprenticeship.

Where it can lead to

There are number of routes you can take following successful completion of a course. Further study can include Higher Education courses or a Higher Apprenticeship where you will expand your skills through study whilst earning a wage. Or you may choose to move directly into employment.
