The construction industry is booming with thousands of new homes being built in Barking & Dagenham alone.
However, the number of construction apprentices in the country is in decline and only a handful of those are women. Barking & Dagenham College and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham are keen to encourage more.
12 Apprenticeships which involve working for the Council whilst training at the College are up for grabs in carpentry, electrical, painting & decorating, plastering and plumbing.
The College’s current female construction apprentices have gained some valuable real-work experience over the past few months, painting and decorating a number of buildings including Lewisham Academy; four females were part of a team which completed a redecoration of the Academy recently in partnership with construction firm Saint-Gobain.
The apprentices are all employed by Aspire, a social enterprise created by Barking & Dagenham College to give real work opportunities to apprentices and students currently in training.
17 year old Carrieanne Crosfield from Barking was one of the apprentices to take part: “The Aspire project has changed my life and got me on to a great career path. On this Apprenticeship I’ve gained a first aid certificate and next year I will get my CSCS card so I’ll be site-ready.
“We’ve also had the opportunity to work on really interesting projects including film sets and Lewisham Academy.”
