The Technical Skills Academy is a purpose-built professional and technical training campus and opened its doors to the first students in 2012.

The Academy is a contemporary training campus, offering you a spacious and up-to-date facilities and equipment that is as good as anything you will find in a professional work environment. That's because we know how important it is for you to train for your career in a space which is as similar as possible to a real work environment.

Built by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, and managed and run by Barking & Dagenham College, the Technical Skills Academy offers a creative and buzzing atmosphere where you can follow professional and techncial courses that train you for work.

That means the Academy has up-to-the-minute professional training facilities, and it is kitted out with the latest technology and equipment. 

Working with real customers to give you that job-ready edge

There is nothing like working with real customers to help you get ready for work. You can prepare in the workshop or classroom, but at some point you just need to do it!

Working with customers helps you develop your communication skills, your team work skills, as well as your professional and technical expertise. You are fully supported and will work under the guidance of our expert lecturers.

So, if you are training to be a professional chef, hairdresser, or beauty therapist you will have the opportunity to work in these commercial businesses:

  • Short Blue restaurant
  • The Salon 2, our commercial and training beauty salon 
  • A Wella professional hairdressing salon, the Headjogs Training Academy & Salon.

Regional Newspaper Internship for IT Student

Julius Razanauskas, 18, from Upton Park took top prize with his website design as part of the Creative Barking & Dagenham project. He also won a paid internship at the Barking & Dagenham Post after impressing the Editor. 

With a 100% attendance record, star student Julius is planning to head to university to study for a Computer Science degree.
