The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment course is designed to give students a qualification that provides the knowledge, skills and understanding required to gain employment, progress to a level 3 apprenticeship or progress to a T Level qualification in Design, Surveying and Planning (Construction)

This qualification prepares you for employment and higher education in the construction sector and is suitable for you if you wish to kickstart a career in professional construction in relation to design, surveying and planning or if you are interested in pursuing a professional or technical career in the construction industry. The qualification will suitably prepare you to study a T Levels in Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning after one year.

Our study programmes include a vocational qualification, English and maths, work experience and employability skills.

The BTEC First Certificate requires eight units of study

  • Construction Technology
  • Construction and Design
  • Scientific and Mathematical Applications for Construction
  • Sustainability in Construction
  • Construction Processes and Operations
  • Construction Drawing Techniques
  • Tendering and Estimating
  • Exploring Civil Engineering

The course is continuously assessed with some external assessment and testing through written and practical assignments and test. There are timetabled sessions designed to enhance skills in English and maths, separate certificates will be issued on successful completion of the course.

The assessment will be through a series of reports, practical and some external examinations that will enable you to provide evidence of meeting the assessment criteria. You will learn by completing projects and assignments which are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

To achieve a pass grade for the unit, learners must meet the assessment criteria set out in the specification. Additional assessment criteria are required to achieve Merit and Distinction grades.

You will need to have GCSE Maths, English Language and two additional subjects at grade 3 (D) or above.

There are several different pathways which are available to you following the successful completion of your First Diploma in Construction and The Built Environment

Options to consider include:

  • Level 3 T Levels – This qualification will allow you to pursue a T Level in qualification in Design, Surveying and Planning (Construction)
  • Level 3 Apprenticeship in Construction and the Built Environment which is recognised by industry employers and professional organisations.

There are number of routes you can take following successful completion of a course. Further study can include Higher Education courses or a Higher Apprenticeship where you will expand your skills through study whilst earning a wage. Or you may choose to move directly into employment.
